Ways to maximise space in a small bathroom

A small bathroom can often feel cramped and cluttered, but with some clever design choices and smart solutions, you can transform it into a functional and spacious-feeling oasis.

Regardless the size of your bathroom, our dedicated design team will create a bespoke bathroom tailored to your wishes and needs.

Our team are highly experienced in designing bathrooms of all shapes, sizes and quirks. Here are a few ideas which we incorporate into any bathroom design, but especially when trying to maximise the space in a small bathroom.

Recessed Shelving

Wall space is a valuable asset in a small bathroom. Instead of bulky cabinets that protrude into the room, consider recessing shelves directly into the wall. This provides a clean, integrated look while offering essential storage for toiletries and towels.

Mirrors

Mirrors are your best friend in a small bathroom. A large, strategically, well-placed mirror can reflect light and the room itself, creating a powerful illusion of depth and space. Consider a full-width mirror above the vanity or even a series of smaller mirrors. The more light you can bounce around the room, the more open and airy it will feel.

Mirror Cabinets

Following on from mirrors, another fantastic two-in-one solution is a mirror cabinet. Not only does this provide a mirror for daily routines but also hidden storage for all your bathroom items, keeping surfaces clutter-free and the room feeling more open.

An illuminated mirror cabinet can also enhance the room with a modern twist, brightening up the room making it feel more spacious.

Slimline Fitted Furniture

Fitted furniture is a game-changer for small bathrooms. Opting for slimline units that are designed to maximise storage without taking up too much floor space is a brilliant option for your small bathroom. We have a variety of furniture on display in our showroom for you to browse, and with our CAD system we can create a design of your room which you can digitally see so you know what your room will look like before going ahead.

Also, integrated furniture allows you to hide pipes and plumbing, creating a sleek, seamless look. By keeping toiletries and other items tucked away, you prevent the visual clutter that can make a room feel cramped.

Towel Trees and Radiators

In an ensuite or main bathroom, a towel tree is a great alternative to a towel rail as this takes up less room and you don’t need the wall space like you would need to fit a towel rail.

Solutions such as a towel tree, or a tall narrow towel rail can provide ample hanging space for towels without taking up valuable wall space. Using space vertically will help when working with a small room, too.

We have multiple towel rails on display in our showroom to browse.

Tiles

The easiest way to make a room feel bigger is to use light coloured tiles. Shades of whites, creams, and pale greys reflect light, making the room appear brighter and more expansive. For an even more significant effect, consider using the same tile on both the walls and the floor. This creates a continuous surface that draws the eye, eliminating visual breaks and making the entire space feel larger.

Another option is using vertical stripes to give the impression of higher ceilings. This simple design choice can add a touch of style while visually stretching the dimensions of your bathroom.

Wall-hung Fixtures

To increase your floor space, mounting your toilet, vanity, and even cabinets directly to the wall frees up the floor below. This not only makes cleaning easier but, more importantly, creates an uninterrupted floor line. The more floor you can see, the more spacious the room will feel. Look out for innovative slimline frame designs from manufacturers, such as the new 320mm wide options, which make wall-hung fixtures a viable option for even the narrowest of spaces.

Underfloor Heating

Radiators can take up valuable wall space, which is especially problematic in a small bathroom. Underfloor heating provides luxurious warmth without taking up any physical space at all. This allows you to use all your wall space for storage, mirrors, or simply to keep the room feeling uncluttered.

By using these clever design tricks, you can transform your small bathroom from a cramped space to a stylish and functional sanctuary. From smart storage solutions to optical illusions created with mirrors and tiles, there are countless ways to make your compact bathroom feel bigger and brighter.
